Portable and Affordable: A Review of the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM Lens

3 weeks ago 13

Canon's RF lenses have quickly earned a lot of respect for pushing the boundaries of design and providing top-notch performance and image quality, though most have been very expensive. On the other hand, at $299, the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM bucks that trend, and in between that affordable price and its highly portable size, it looks like a potentially fantastic option. This great video review takes a look at the lens and the sort of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice.

Coming to you from Dustin Abbott, this excellent video review takes a look at the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM lens. In addition to being highly affordable ($299), the 16mm f/2.8 is very portable, weighing just 5.8 oz (165 g). Nonetheless, Canon still included a variety of useful features, including:

  • One aspherical element for less distortion and better sharpness
  • Minimum focusing distance of 5.1 inches for maximum magnification of 0.26x
  • Super Spectra Coating for less flares and ghosting and deeper contrast
  • STM autofocus motor for smooth and quiet autofocus suitable for both photo and video applications
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh

Of course, at $299, you should not expect top-shelf performance from the RF 16mm f/2.8, but for the price, it looks like a fun and useful lens. Check out the video above for Abbott's full thoughts.
